Education is the passing on of knowledge and experience of the elder generations to the younger generations. Initially, it is through teachers and professors but later on it’s a process of continuous self learning throughout your life. With the population explosion and economic recession creating an immense shortage of jobs, the industrial requirements have drastically increased. Not only are they looking for skilled workers but also people with soft skills. This puts the current education system under test. How does it train its students in a way to meet the industry standards without putting too much stress on them?
The answer lies in analyzing the current system of education. We will find it has become too much object oriented .This has made the classes boring, repetitive and very mechanical. There is no development of personality.
Education should be equally devoted to enriching the personal life of students and to training them to be productive workers. These two facets are very much interlinked and interdependent. Productivity depends not only on knowledge but also on the personality of the person. Definitely, education doesn’t stop at school but personality development occurs only in the early stages of life. It is extremely difficult to mould someone after that.
Thus, the question of prime importance is what are the qualities of a productive worker?
Firstly, he should have a thorough knowledge of the basic principles and theories. This helps in solving problems from their fundamentals without any assumptions. Secondly, familiarity with the technical terms, machinery, soft wares and latest happenings and technologies is very essential. This will help him to diffuse into the company’s affairs smoothly. Thirdly, he should have a desire to learn and be efficient in it. This is where college education comes into account. The aim of college is not to get the students a job but to help them build their career. College life makes students supple enough to absorb anything efficiently and quickly in future endeavors.
All the above mentioned qualities will allow the student to survive in his job but to build a successful career he will require some soft skills. This is where the necessity of education to enrich the personal life of students becomes important. Discipline and punctuality are the fundamental qualities looked for in a productive worker. Time and stress management, human relationships, communication skills, group behaviorism and organizational capabilities are the keys to success. These qualities are not developed overnight. They are part of the individual’s character and personality. Student organized cultural and technical festivals, group projects, social activities, industrial visits; deadlines and sports activities are few of the activities which help develop these personality traits.
There needs to be further research on the vocational training of the students .This will help in developing better methods to inculcate the above mentioned personality traits . Yet, a lot remains desirable on the implementation front. There should be governing authorities to ensure that whatever is researched goes down to the ground levels of the education structure. Only then, a generation of highly productive employable workers can be achieved.
